This is not your mother's sangria

sangria3 (Custom).jpg

This recipe is courtesy of Valerie Myers, mixologist, brewer of fine beer, and business coach extraordinaire.

sangria1 (Custom).jpg1 bottle of Charles Shaw Cabernet (750ml), available at Trader Joes (DO NOT substitute another brand or varietal.  My experience is that the wine must be cheap cab for the structure & flavor - syrah is too fruity, & merlot doesn't stand up.  This one works great and costs just $2.99 a bottle - what a deal!)
1 liter of Squirt
3-4 large shots (2/3 to 3/4 cup) Harlequin orange brandy/cognac blend
1/2 of a large ripe mango or 1 peach or nectarine, maybe some cherries
2-3 Tbsp. lime juice

Just mix everything together in a very large pitcher and add the lime juice to taste.  This will make about 2-1/2 liters, so be sure you have a large enough pitcher.

I like to puree the mango/peaches, but lots of people like actual fruit in their sangria.  So you can dice them up instead, if you want, or do a little of both.  I discovered cherries are great in this, pitted & halved, when they're in season.  I would not recommend grapes, though.

Let it sit in the fridge for a few hours or overnight, if possible, and serve over ice.
